INTRODUCtion

The Mugatxoan project offers a programme of workshops, processes and presentations shared by visual and performance artists with the aim of discussing and tackling creative experiences, using open dialogue and common research. The Mugatxoan 2010 Programme will take place in: Arteleku (Donostia - San Sebastián), Teatro de la Laboral (Gijón) and Fundação de Serralves (Porto).

The schedule for the project this year will fall into two phases:

- First phase from 21 June to 18 July in Donostia - San Sebastián and Gijón.
- Second phase from 20 September to 3 October in Porto.

The programme of workshops in the first phase will be given by Mårten Spångberg / Tor Lindstrad, Inazio Escudero and Itziar Okariz; parallel to this there will be a workshop for children with Eva Meyer-Keller, Rico Repotente y Sybille Müller.
Xavier Le Roy y Gary Stevens will be in charge of the workshops in the second phase.

Call for entries

In order to take part you must propose an individual project or, more specifically a phase from the process of the project that you will be developing during your stay; the aim is not to finish it, but rather to provide you with space and time for research and confrontation.

Ion Munduate and Blanca Calvo will guide your projects, stimulating moments that will generate shared experiences with the other participants and guests, thus exploring the processes and means of production, collaboration, participation and the creation of meaning.

As well as personal work, you will take part in joint workshops with the guest artists who, this year, are: Mårten Spångberg / Tor Lindstrad, Inazio Escudero and Itziar Okariz, for the first period. Work in the workshops is aimed at sharing, reviewing, redoing and questioning the influence of the process on the final result of the projects. The goal is to provoke experiences and activities and to tackle lines of work, seeking parallel strategies and schemes that reflect on how to carry out an idea.

MARTEN SPANGBERG/ TOR LINDSTRAND (INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL)

WORKSHOP

Dates: From 22 June to 3 July

Venue: Arteleku

Following the workshop carried out in September 2009, aimed at analysing and re-thinking the relationships between the cultural institutions, their users and their function in cities, we return to carry out a specific project in the city of Donostia -San Sebastián.
We propose activities in a variety of places in the city so as to imagine the city from the viewpoint of architecture and action.
Architecture is not merely designing buildings; a city is more than a group of buildings. How you imagine a city and how you practice it is determined, among other things, by the buildings that it is made up of, by the infrastructure and by the volume of the public spaces, such as squares and parks. How the people behave in a city is linked to their identity and to the group that they would like to form part of; how this city is perceived and how one can influence the way that others experience it also plays a part.

Tor Lindstrand y Mårten Spångberg began to collaborate as International Festival in 2004, but they have worked together since the early nineteen nineties, moving smoothly between performance, video and architecture, theory, academicism and pure entertainment. International Festival is a platform for long-term collaboration between architecture and performance. They were nominated «Architects of the year» in Sweden in 2007. The work of International Festival is centred on questions specifically related to distribution, responsibility and property in social and economic contexts. Created by an architect and an artist associated with performance, they occupy a territory where the opportunities to pro-actively stimulate and change the coordination of space-time are central. This work is situated in the specificity and singularity of the relationships that it produces in collaboration with the viewer.

INAZIO ESCUDERO

WORKSHOP

Dates: From 5 to 9 July

Venue: Teatro de la Laboral

Let us suppose that you have decided to put your name down for this Mugatxoan adventure and you want to know who I am and what we’re going to be doing in Gijón. Read no further and send off the application. The less you know about what we’re going to do in Teatro de la Laboral the better.

If you’re simply browsing and looking for something to do around this date, then take it seriously and get a grip on yourself; travelling and being with other people, different people, people who work differently to you is always an adventure for the self-centred in order to appreciate your differences. If, after all that, you still want to know something more about the activities that we’re going to carry out... untie a shoe, take off your sock, pinch one of your toes insistently, at its base, on its pads, at the top and at the bottom, concentrating on a single toe —which one? (The most forgotten). Dedicate some time to it. Then go back to the text.

Have you finished? Is that it? It’s important to squeeze the skin firmly.
I know that people want to know things beforehand, but I don’t feel like giving details about the activities. What is important is not what we’re going to do, but that you are prepared to work as a group, dissolving for several hours a day. Things have to be lived out properly. Outside of the workshop hours, you’ll have time to develop your own personal projects, so I’m hoping for people prepared to put themselves in the hands of others. We’ll probably do exercises related to music, like singing for example. We’ll try out lots of things and we’ll try to create situations.

So, thanks a lot if you’ve been pinching yourself and if you didn’t do it or if you’ve only pinched yourself mentally, consider it as some sort of test.

Only you know if you’ve activated your circulation or not.
Things have a reason, but not all the reasons are needed beforehand.

ITZIAR OKARIZ

WORKSHOP

Dates: From 12 to 16 July

Venue: Teatro de la Laboral

The workshop will be centred on reflection on the act of performance as cultural construction, proposed as a tool for the production of signs and the transgression and transformation of codes.

On the one hand, I want to invite the participants to share the creative process in relation to basic arrangements of communication, cultural or social signs: greetings, parting phrases and others that belong to the conventions and protocols of human relationships. We will work on decontextualisation as a tool for transformation of meaning, where a sentence or text with an everyday meaning, or belonging to a specific context, is transformed by simply placing it in a different context, as well as transformation of its form by means of repetition or dislocation. We will also analyse the performative nature of voice, tone and the transformation of meaning by modulation.

On the other hand, we will take a close look at the conventional relationship between the public and the performer and elements that define them as such (applause, ovations, booing); as well as elements that might define the performance, such as the microphone or its stand or bodily gestures such as bows or facial movements.

Parallel to this work, I would like to propose the viewing and reading of additional materials that contextualise the issues under study: Chantal Akerman and Eve Kosofsky Sedwick, among others.

Itziar Okariz

Itziar Okariz (Donostia,1965) lives and works between New York and Bilbao. Her work in recent years has been notable for the documentary production of actions carried out in both private and public spaces that question the social norms that define our behaviour. EVA MEYER-KELLER, RICO REPOTENTE, SYBILLE MÜLLER

WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

Dates: From 30 June to 2 July

Venue: Arteleku

Constructing after catastrophes_ sound project.

We want to orchestrate the sounds of catastrophes using everyday objects. With peas we make the sound of rain, with a sheet of plastic the sound of the wind. You will work with different microphones and discover sounds on the theme of catastrophes, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, hurricanes, plane crashes and melting glaciers, but all on a small scale —models of catastrophes, no bigger than a shoe-box.
On the last day of the workshop the children will present the favourite models of the catastrophes that they have worked on to the public.

Eva Meyer-Keller, Sybille Müller and Rico Repotente are from Berlin and in the last 10 years have worked in performance, dance, video and sound.
