Contemporary
computer-assisted kinetic art made its first public appearance in the
exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity which took place in the Institute
of Contemporary Art in London in 1968, curated
by Jasia Reichardt. Since then, kinetic art has little by little become part of
the mainstream and as we become miniaturised, virtualised and cable-free, our
kinetic art follows along the same lines.
This workshop offers an introduction to the basic components of the electronic
systems used in creating kinetic art: what they do, how they interact and how
to use them. We will learn to construct simple circuits, paying special
attention to switches and a variety of sensors. We will learn to construct
sensors based on everyday objects, using design to turn them into works of art
and environmental installations. We will also work with some simple
microcontrollers. This workshop will place special emphasis on the use of
electronics to mimic highly lifelike behaviour and on the use of sensors to
respond to animated objects and environmental changes. No previous experience
in the field of electronics is necessary.
